About SSET

SSET, an adaptation of CBITS, is designed to help schools and school systems that do not have access to school-based clinicians. Designed with and for teachers and nonclinical school counselors, this program targets students in fifth grade and above. Unlike CBITS, SSET uses a lesson-plan format instead of a clinical manual.

The Center and its partners have studied the effectiveness of SSET. In particular, a randomized controlled pilot study demonstrated that this nonclinical program can be successfully delivered by teachers and counselors. Students in the study showed small reductions in trauma symptoms, with those having high levels of symptoms before taking SSET benefiting the most. Both students and parents reported good-to-high satisfaction with the program. Teachers also reported small improvements in student behavior.

SSET is delivered by school staff with the support of a local clinician who helps troubleshoot and make referrals as needed. SSET consists of 10 student-group meetings and periodic communication with parents to keep them informed about progress in the program.

The program is disseminated nationally and internationally, with manuals available in English and Japanese.

Clinicians can receive SSET training through several formats: live trainings (in person or virtual) and online. Although our live trainings with a certified trainer are considered the gold-standard training approach, the online training is a great option when a live training is not feasible.

To learn more about our trainings, read our Training Menu. Email us for information about scheduling a live training.

SSET trainers undergo a thorough train-the-trainer process. We are proud to highlight our certified faculty and national trainers.
